While we recently published a success story on the rescue, rehabilitation and subsequent release of a rare Cinereous Vulture, found wounded in Western India, a few years ago, an Indian news channel reports a capture and subsequent public torment of another wounded Cinereous Vulture, found in Moradabad, U.P.
A detailed video timeline, displaying the rehabilitation stages, and release of the injured bird found in Bhavnagar district of India, is available on our website http://www.wildsaurashtra.com, or can be seen on the youtube video below:
Having just recently been engaged in this successful rehabilitation, it was heart rending to watch a horrendous new report of the capture and apparent torture of a similar bird in a different area of India. Furthermore, the news report, rather than taking a scientific or conservative stance on the issue, seemed to tout and explain in lurid details the torture of the bird. A video clip from this news report is available below:
It is unfortunate for India, that in today's world, where India pride's itself in its strength in technology, that we have 2 instances of such diverse behavior, being made public. While one is a selfless individual, working on conservation and rehabilitation activities, the other end is a national news agency, reporting in vivid images, the apparent horror of lack of conservation practice in India.
While we are helpless in the current situation, we do hope that other powerful conservationalists and politically connected individuals will take steps to rescue the bird in question and assist in proper rehabilitation and release in the wild. On our end, we continue, within our reach to advocate sentiments of kindness and support to the local populace, towards the wildlife and nature. We have been actively working on rehabilitating and successfully releasing more, different varieties of raptors, including a Marsh Harrier, a Honey Buzzard, an Osprey and a Barn Owl.
We work, not in hopes of personal gain, but in hopes of a shared world, with equal survival rights for all species!
